Cadets at a glance
The Boyle’s Trainee Instructor Course is open to students leaving school who have a love of the outdoors and working with people. The year long course is based at the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre in the Lewis Pass. We call our trainees 'Cadets'!

They experience the best that any education system can offer: one-on-one coaching, mentoring, immediate feedback, and experiential learning.

The course develops in each individual a knowledge base and a range of skills: people skills, life skills, emergency skills, outdoor living and moving and outdoor pursuits skills.

Learn in NZ's best outdoor environment
The great outdoors of New Zealand is the learning environment (the Boyle, Abel Tasman, Central Otago, Castle Hill, Craigieburn, Arthurs Pass, St James, Nelson Lakes and lots more places!)

Limited intake
This specialised course has a limited intake of up to three students per year. There is an enrollment fee plus an estimated $500 in expenses during the year. Students will need to purchase their own gear and equipment as the year develops. There are also opportunities to earn some money during the course.

Student achievement may be measured against unit standards and will involve preparation for NZOIA Leader Award assessments. The accumulation of credits provides the opportunity to achieve NZ Certificate in Outdoor Leadership Level 4 plus one or more of the activity strands in Bush, Rock, Abseil.
In addition students can gain NZ recognized first aid qualifications.

Cadet graduates usually leave with enough training to move onto junior instructor roles both in NZ and overseas depending on their progress. We have contacts that support this next move in their career.

Great achievements
The Boyle is very proud of the achievements of the trainee instructors/Cadets.
Their successes are celebrated at the annual Cadet graduation ceremony where all the Boyle staff and the Cadet's parents get together to recognise their achievements during the year.
There is a growing and respected group of over 20 graduated Cadets and the programme continues to produce very special instructors!
In 2011 we celebrated the 10 year anniversary of running the Cadet Course with a reunion of many of the very special people who have graduated from the Boyle and gone on to experience many more adventures in the outdoors.
