Potential leaders

Boyle delivers two Potential Leaders Courses each year in the school holidays.
The demand is high........students and teachers are encouraged to ring the Boyle now to book in their students.           

For Year 12 & 13 students who are considered to be potential leaders. This active 5 day course will, through the leadership opportunities provided, begin to turn their potential into reality. Development of Leadership skills including communication skills, skills of briefing and debriefing, self- confidence, initiative and self reliance will be the outcome.  An opportunity exists to achieve the Outdoor Management (NQF domain) Unit Standard 20147 (Level 3; 3 credits) ‘Demonstrate communication skills required for the outdoors.’
 
Students will gain some insight into the world of work for those employed as outdoor instructors. They will be introduced to the tertiary pathways that lead to a career in outdoor education, adventure tourism and outdoor recreation.

A number of our Potential Leaders grads have taken up leadership roles in their schools and in the world of work.  There has been a steady stream into our year-long cadet scheme.  A number are teachers; others are leading companies; while some are outdoor instructors in New Zealand and many parts of the world.

Where students have a career pathway that involves adventure tourism, outdoor recreation and outdoor education leadership/instruction schools can use their Secondary Tertiary  Alignment Resource (STAR) to meet some or all of the cost.

Many of the outcomes for which STAR was created feature in our evaluations including
  • informed student decision making through exploring a career pathway
  • awareness of what life is like in an outdoor workplace
  • unit standard credits on the qualifications framework
  • an introduction to skills and knowledge required to work outside
  • knowledge and experience on how to work in a team
  • setting new goals
