Cadet Course

The Boyle’s Trainee Instructor Course is part of the Kaiapoi High School Outdoor Education programme and is open to students from all schools. The year long course is based at the Boyle River.

Like to spend the year in the outdoors? Want to be an outdoor instructor? Then this course could be for you!

Students enrol at Kaiapoi High School for a one-year Trainee Instructor Course based at the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre in the Lewis Pass.

They experience the best that any education system can offer: one-on-one coaching, mentoring, immediate feedback, and experiential learning.

The course develops in each individual a knowledge base and a range of skills: people skills, life skills, emergency skills, outdoor living and moving and outdoor pursuits skills.

Learn in NZ's best environs

The great outdoors of New Zealand is the learning environment (the Boyle, Abel Tasman, Central Otago, Castle Rock, Craigieburn, Arthurs Pass, coastal NZ through the Spirit of NZ, etc)

Limited intake

This specialised course has a limited intake of up to three students per year. There is an enrolment fee plus an estimated $500 in expenses during the year. Students may also want to purchase their own gear and equipment. The course is delivered by the Boyle staff under Kaiapoi High’s provider status with New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the SkillsActive Industry Training Organization formerly known as the Sport, Fitness, and Recreation ITO.

Outcomes

Student achievement is measured against unit standards. The accumulation of credits provides the opportunity to achieve National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Leadership) (Level 3) plus one or more of the activity strands in Bush, Rock, Abseil or Moutain Biking. This qualification is also recognised by NZOIA (NZ Outdoors Instructor Association).
In addition students can gain NZ recognized first aid qualifications along with the EONZ Outdoor Leader Award.
Graduates usually leave with enough training to move onto instructor roles both in NZ and overseas depending on their progress.
