Adventure Based Learning (ABL)

The Boyle organises two ABL Courses each year for students in Years 11-13.  The demand is high........students and teachers are encouraged to ring the Boyle now to book in their students.

These residential courses are organised in the school holidays with students from a variety of schools participating. The course provides students with the opportunity to experience Adventure Based Learning in a mountain environment. There is a strong focus on personal and social development through participation in outdoor activities. A more detailed decription of what ABL is can be found here.

Students will set and review personal and group goals, challenge themselves, develop self-confidence and a feeling of self worth. This is an ideal course to develop team work and can lead on to our Potential Leaders Course at a later date.

All participants will have the opportunity to complete three L2 unit standards in Adventure Based Learning for a total of 9 credits. The instructors will be assessing the students throughout the week, providing feedback and coaching where necessary.

Students will gain some insight into the world of work for those employed as outdoor instructors. They will be introduced to the tertiary pathways that lead to a career in outdoor education, adventure tourism and outdoor recreation.

We are also able to organise single school ABL courses on request at other times. Please contact us for more details regarding the latter.

THE PROGRAMME is made up from the following:
Icebreakers                                     Trust Activities
Problem solving activities                 High Ropes Course Activities

Where students have a career pathway that involves adventure tourism, outdoor recreation and outdoor education leadership/instruction schools can use their Secondary Tertiary  Alignment Resource (STAR) to meet some or all of the cost.

Many of the outcomes for which STAR was created feature in our evaluations including
  • informed student decision making through exploring a career pathway
  • awareness of what life is like in an outdoor workplace
  • unit standard credits on the qualifications framework
  • an introduction to skills and knowledge required to work outside
  • knowledge and experience on how to work in a team
  • setting new goals
