Trainee Instructor Course

Like to spend the year in the outdoors? Then this course could be for you.

Students enroll at Kaiapoi High School for a one-year Trainee Instructor Course based at the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre.

They experience the best that any education system can offer. That is, one-on-one coaching, mentoring, immediate feedback, and experiential learning.

The course develops in each individual a knowledge base, and a range of skills: from people skills, through emergency skills, to outdoors living and moving, and outdoor pursuits.

The great outdoors of New Zealand is the learning environment (the Boyle, Abel Tasman, Central Otago, Castle Rock, Craigieburn, Arthurs Pass, coastal NZ through the Spirit of NZ, etc)

This exciting course has a limited intake of three students per year, there is an enrollment fee plus an estimated $500 in expenses during the year. Students may also want to purchase their own gear and equipment. The course is delivered by the Boyle staff under Kaiapoi High’s provider status with New Zealand Qualifications Authority (www.nzqa.govt.nz) and the Sport, Fitness, and Recreation Industry Training Organization (www.sfrito.org.nz)

Student achievement is measured against unit standards. The accumulation of credits takes them to and beyond the requirements of the National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Group Leadership) (Level 3). Further, NZ recognized first aid qualifications are gained along with the EONZ Outdoors I qualification.
