ABOUT US
The Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre is operated by the not-for-profit North Canterbury Alpine Trust. We are
based 15km south of the Lewis Pass, nestled between the Sylvia Tops and the Libretto mountain range. We provide tailor-made outdoor education based programmes for school groups as well as offering a number of our own "Boyle" courses. Adventure based learning (ABL) is a core component of everything that we do. Safety is one of our primary focuses and while the outdoor environment always provides it share of risks, we are consistently identifying and managing these to ensure a high quality and safe experience for clients and staff. We also recently completed our revalidation of OutdoorsMark, a independent safety assurance programme. More about OutdoorsMark and what it means for our clients can be found here. A key component of outdoor education is having quality instructors who are able to provide fun, challenging and safe experiences. All of our staff are experienced in the delivery of our programmes and are required to complete staff training and/or a period of observation prior to beginning work. We are rather unique in that we offer an outdoor instructor apprenticeship through our Cadet Course. Started in 2003 it offers school leavers a full immersion learning experience. A number of our cadets have gone on into careers in the industry. Kaiapoi High School has a longstanding relationship with us. They were one of the founding schools of the Centre and we continue to have a strong relationship with them. It is through our agreement with Kaiapoi High that we are able to offer unit standards to students as well as deliver the Cadet Course. Our location at one end of the St James Walkway means we are able to offer a number of services to trampers. We run a shuttle service to the beginning of a number of local walks, secure parking and casual accommodation and showers. For more information and pricing of these services, click here.
